Portfolio bounty for Karnataka CM HDK, but coalition woes too

H.D. Kumaraswamy retaining as many as 11 portfolios including the key ones of finance and power.

Bengaluru: On a day when portfolio allocation finally happened with CM H.D. Kumaraswamy retaining as many as 11 portfolios including the key ones of finance and power, the CM had another task cut out for himself – step in to check the disquiet among newly elected Congress lawmakers who were left out during the Cabinet expansion and remained defiant.

Kumaraswamy, who was sworn in as CM on May 23 and proved his majority in the Assembly on May 25, had not been able to distribute portfolios to his ministers, largely due to the tumult among Congress MLAs, some of whom were ministers in the previous government.

The CM and several state Congress leaders met these lawmakers who included former water resources minister M.B. Patil, who appeared in no mood to relent, at least not for now, after which Mr Kumaraswamy was left with no option but to request the Congress high-command to act immediately and resolve the situation before it reached breaking point.
