PFA activists claim protest damp squib in Thiruvananthapuram

Kunnumpara ward member V. Sreekala had visited the neighbourhood and collected the locals' views.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 'People For Animals' has claimed that there was no major protest against the shelter for abandoned pets being run on the 1.5-acre area at Valiyarathala in Malayinkeezhu panchayat near here since 2007. A protest was organised by the Malayinkeezhu Congress mandalam committee president G. Pankajakshan on Sunday evening to garner support to ensure the closure of the shelter.

However, only fewer than two dozen people turned up for the meeting. The majority opined that they did not face any inconvenience because of its operation. Later, a Kudumbashree meeting was held when more people joined, but they did not raise any objection. It is said that a private builder has been eyeing the area.

The PFA people had posted a notice in front of their gate inviting the locals to see the welfare steps being taken for the abandoned cats and dogs. Malayinkeezhu grama panchayat president S. Chandran Nair told DC that his panel would come out with a resolution on the issue at the panchayat meeting on Tuesday.

Kunnumpara ward member V. Sreekala had visited the neighbourhood and collected the locals' views. PFA trustee Latha Indira told DC that the visitors have not complained about any foul smell.

"We are taking steps to enforce the already six-feet fencing by erecting another iron grill over it. The local leaders have also demanded that a huge burial pit should be dug," she said.
