80-year-old land-grab victim to contest polls over laxity in justice system

Karimnagar: An 80-year-old woman in the Jagtial Assembly segment on Tuesday filed her nomination as an independent candidate for the upcoming Assembly elections in a protest against the justice system, for failing to grant her relief after she lost her property based on forged documents.

The woman, Cheeti Shyamala of Kurikyala village in Gangadhara mandal of Karimnagar district, owned a building in Vidhyanagar area. She said that following her husband’s death in 2016, her elder son, Sri Rama Rao, forged documents, grabbed her property and evicted her.

She said she had been staying with her younger son, Venkataramana Rao, in Jagtial town since then.

Venkataramana Rao told Deccan Chronicle said that he tried to resolve the issue by talking to the elders of their community and also took the issue to the notice of higher officials, but his brother exerted influence and claimed the building based on the fake documents.

Shyamala then approached the court for justice, but the case was kept pending and she could not visit the court frequently due to her advanced age.

“Vexed with the extreme intolerance, she sought to show the society of how her son had cheated her and decided to contest the elections as a protest against the entire system,” he said.
