Expedite drought relief fund disbursal: Bommai to Karnataka Govt

Haveri: Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has called upon the State government to expedite the distribution of drought relief funds to farmers, emphasizing the necessity for concrete support rather than mere promises.

During a protest in Shiggaon organized by farmers advocating for the declaration of the taluk as drought-hit, Bommai expressed his concerns.

He pointed out that the government has been slow in declaring drought-hit taluks, and finally declared 195 taluks as drought-hit in September.

"In Haveri district, Shiggaon, Hangal, and Byadgi taluks must be declared as drought-hit on Monday, otherwise, we will launch a protest along with the farmers," Bommai declared.

Bommai said that he had already discussed the matter with the Revenue Minister who assured him that a decision would be made by the end of the month after careful consideration of all aspects.

"I have urged for a swift announcement, given the plight of crops and water scarcity. The response has been positive, and I am hopeful that it will be announced soon. Should it not happen, we will stand with the farmers in protest after October 9," he affirmed.

Bommai pressed the state government to initiate immediate drought relief efforts, including arrangements for fodder and drinking water for both people and animals, instead of solely relying on announcements.

"Drought cannot be alleviated with mere words. The Government of India has already allocated Rs 250 crore in the first installment. Since deputy commissioners have substantial funds in their PD accounts, these should be utilized for drought relief efforts. The government should prioritize converting short and medium-term loans of farmers into long-term loans and extending new credit lines. The drought study and survey can follow later," he suggested.

He reminisced about the measures taken by his government during the flood crisis, highlighting the swift allocation of Rs 2,500 crore in compensation, which was promptly distributed within a month without any delays or hesitations.
