Sriram drove car heavily drunk: Pinarayi Vijayan

A serious investigation will be conducted against the accused in the car accident that killed ‘Siraj’ Thiruvananthapuram bureau chief K. M. Basheer.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the initial assessment is that IAS officer Sriram Venkittaraman drove the car after drinking an excessive quantity of liquor.

A serious investigation will be conducted against the accused in the car accident that killed ‘Siraj’ Thiruvananthapuram bureau chief K. M. Basheer.

Mr Vijayan while speaking to reporters here on Wednesday said that nobody would be allowed to dilute the investigation. Strong actions will be taken against those who make any such attempt.

The terms of reference of ongoing investigation included a probe into the circumstances that led to his driving in an intoxicated condition.

The special team probing the case will also investigate the failure of the police, including the delay in conducting the blood test and registering of FIR.

"Everyone is aware that the car was speeding. The petition submitted by journalists on the issue would be considered seriously," the Chief Minister said.

"Sriram is not a person who is unaware of road rules. If such a person broke the rules, the seriousness of the case increases."

The Chief Minister also said the matters related to rendering financial help to the family of the journalist is under consideration of the government. The Chief Minister also offered an insurance scheme for journalists to secure their life.
