15 in fray for Atmakur bypoll after scrutiny

Nominations of 13 candidates have been rejected for different reasons

TIRUPATI: Election authorities on Tuesday scrutinised the 28 nominations filed by various candidates for the byelection in Atmakur assembly constituency. Authorities rejected 13 nominations for different reasons.

With this, 15 candidates are in fray in Atmakur bypoll, voting for which will be held on June 23 and results declared on June 26. All eyes are now on withdrawal of nominations, which can be done till 3 pm June 9. Final list of contesting candidates thus be declared on June 9 evening.

According to a statement issued by the district PR department, joint collector and returning officer Harendira Prasad thoroughly examined all documents in the presence of candidates who had filed nominations. Nominations of 13 candidates have been rejected for different reasons. Election general observer Suresh Kumar oversaw the process for scrutiny of nominations in the presence of Atmakur in-charge RDO Bapireddy. This is the second byelection for an assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh caused by the death of sitting MLAs after the 2019 general election.

Badwel (SC) constituency in Kadapa district saw a bypoll in October, 2021 following the death of sitting MLA Venkata Subbiah. Bypoll in Atmakur assembly segment has been necessitated by the sudden demise of YSR Congress MLA Mekapati Goutham Reddy in February this year.
