BJP-AIADMK honeymoon not yet over, says DMK

State law minister Shanmugam has accused the Governor of functioning in an unilateral manner and not consulting the democratically elected government.

Chennai: Not just Opposition parties, even the AIADMK government has raised a banner of protest against Governor Banwarilal Purohit for his decision to appoint Karnataka's M.K.Surappa as the vice-chancellor of the Anna University.

State law minister Shanmugam has accused the Governor of functioning in an unilateral manner and not consulting the democratically elected government. This is the first time the state government is coming out in such direct attack against the Governor though the DMK and other Opposition parties have been accusing Purohit of violating state autonomy by conducting review meetings with the state officials across the state. However, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday defended his decision to appoint M. K. Surappa as Vice Chancellor of Anna University and “requested” (his critics) that “politics be kept out” and “unnecessary mud slinging avoided” over the appointment.

DMK spokesperson T. K.S. Elangovan claimed, “the AIADMK is coming up with a lame excuse on the issue because one of the three members of the search committee is a representative of the TN government. The state government still enjoys the support of the Centre and the honeymoon between the two is not over. Had it taken exception to the Governor's functioning, it would have opposed his review meetings in the districts.” “Does Shanmugam want people to be blind to all high corruption which has been the hallmark of universities in TN. The Governor is trying to clean up the system and our Dravidian leaders are trying to brush it down with a parochial paint,” a BJP senior said reacting to political outburst over the appointment.
