Opposition Congress lags behind on bypoll preparations

Even at the DCC presidents' meeting that entrusted leaders with the preparations for Lok Sabha seats, Chengannur was not on the agenda.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While BJP and CPM are well ahead with their campaign for Chengannur by-poll, the KPCC governing council meeting held here on Wednesday gave it a pass.

Even at the DCC presidents' meeting that entrusted leaders with the preparations for Lok Sabha seats, Chengannur was not on the agenda.

However, the KPCC decided to ask the high command to announce the candidature within two days, but there was no discussion at the meeting who it should be.

Deccan Chronicle understands senior leader Oommen Chandy will call the shot, but he is yet to reveal his mind, even to his loyalists.

Names making the rounds now are former legislator M. Murali, who stands a better chance, D. Vijayakumar and Alappuzha DCC general secretary Eby Kuriakose.

“None of us is aware of who is going to be the candidate,” said a DCC president. The high-power Political Affairs Committee is likely to endorse Mr Chandy's candidate.

They are scheduled to take part in the day and night protest meeting in Chengannur on Friday. However, Alappuzha DCC president M. Liju denied any rift.
