Hyderabad: Notification for civic elections issued

Of the 13 municipal corporations, seven mayor’s posts are in the general category, four have been reserved for BCs and one each for SCs and STs.

Hyderabad: As the way is open to hold elections to 120 municipalities and nine municipal corporations with the dismissal of the petitions against the elections by the High Court, the State Election Commission on Tuesday announced that the polls would be held on January 22, as per the schedule that was issued on December 23. Counting of votes will be held on January 25.

On Tuesday SEC Commissioner V. Nagi Reddy while issuing the notification said the notification for the tenth municipal corporation, Karimnagar, was deferred in view of the High Court order to rectify the defects in the voter list of certain divisions. Mr Reddy said that nominations will be received from Wednesday at 10.30 am till 5 pm on January 10. Nominations will be scrutinised on January 11 and date for withdrawal of nomination is January 14. Polling will be held on January 22 from 7 am to 5 pm.On January 5, the state government had finalised reservations for the posts of chairpersons for 123 municipalities and for mayors of 13 municipal corporations in the state.

Among municipal chairpersons’ posts in the 123 municipalities, four seats are reserved seats for STs, 17 for SCs, 40 for BCs and 62 were allocated to general category. About 50 per cent seats have been reserved for women in all categories which will be selected through lottery system.
