Fielding candidates for all 403 assembly seats in UP: Cong

The announcement has come at a time when grapevine is still abuzz of possible alliance between Congress and Samajwadi Party.

Lucknow: Despite talks of an alliance with SP in Uttar Pradesh, Congress said it was going ahead with preparations for fielding candidates in all 403 assembly seats in the state on Sunday.

"We are in the process of selecting candidates for all the seats," UP PCC chief Raj Babbar said. He said all the names will be recommended to the Central Election Committee of Congress on Monday.

So far candidates have been selected for the first three phases of the UP polls.

While Babbar has not been in favour of any alliance with SP, senior Congress leader and in charge of UP Ghulam Nabi Azad is not against the idea.

On the other hand, senior SP leader Ramgopal Yadav refused to comment, saying he had not spoken to SP President Akhilesh Yadav and was not in a position to make any comment.

UP CM Akhilesh Yadav has been saying that the SP will get majority on its own and will bag over 300 seats in case they stitch an alliance.

However, talks of a possible alliance with Congress had hit the roadblock when Mulayam Singh Yadav ruled out the idea with any party and wanted only merger of parties with SP.

But, with Akhilesh gaining the upper hand in power clash in Samajwadi Party, Congress seems to be moving closer to an alliance with the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh to keep the Muslim-Yadav equation intact.
