Police under stress, says Duraimurugan

Responding to queries, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami said over 1,100 people were questioned in connection with the death of Ramajeyam.

Chennai: The state has failed to address issues relating to police personnel and Tamil Nadu police officers and uniformed staff are under periodic stress, DMK leader Duraimurugan said while raising the issue in the Assembly on Thursday.

Even in case of murders, police miss the crucial 24-hour golden period that is essential for cracking the case and till date there is no breakthrough in DSP Vishnupriya suicide case and Trichy realtor Ramajayam murder case, he said.
Quoting former DGP Ramanujam's interview to media, Duraimurugan said the state police while investigating the murder of KN Ramajeyam, brother of DMK leader K.N. Nehru missed the crucial 24-hour golden period while investigating the case. The deceased was abducted and killed by unidentified persons in Trichy in March 2012. Five years have passed, but there is no breakthrough in the case so far.

The DMK leader also alleged that the crime rate in the state has increased during the AIADMK regime and charged that more than 20,000 posts are lying vacant.

Responding to queries, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami said over 1,100 people were questioned in connection with the death of Ramajeyam. Two persons "close" to the deceased realtor were subjected to polygraph test as they made contradictory statements, he said denying slack in investigation.

Ramajeyam's wife had moved the Madurai bench of the Madras high court seeking a CBI probe and based on the court's directions, regular status reports were being filed by the CB-CID during every hearing, he said.

Earlier, Duraimurugan, who began the debate for the opposition took exception to the absence of DGP T K Rajendiran and Chennai Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan in the House in the designated space for officials and said he would commence the speech only if the top officials were present.

Referring to the Vishnupriya suicide, the CM said a suicide note found from her house has said "no one is responsible for her death". The case had been transferred to CBI in June 2016 following a court order and central agency is probing the case, he added.
