Karunanidhi commends governemt decision to rename Madras High Court
Chennai: Commending the BJP government at the Centre for approving the name change of Madras high court into Chennai high court, DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday demanded that Tamil should be allowed as one of the high court languages.
“Though, the BJP government often indulged in attempts unrelated to people’s welfare, we cannot refuse to appreciate good acts like this”, the DMK leader who has been criticising the Union government on many issues for the last few weeks, said.
Advocates and people of Tamil Nadu had been demanding to change the name of Madras high court into ‘Chennai high court’ or ‘Tamil Nadu high court’ for several years. The Centre’s decision is a victory for their protests, he said.
He recalled that the ‘Madras State’ was renamed as Tamil Nadu when DMK under its founder C.N. Annadurai formed the State government in 1967. The DMK government under him changed the name of Madras into Chennai in 1996.
He also recalled that the DMK government had sent proposals to the Centre to allow Tamil as one of the court languages of Madras high court and requested the Centre to accept this demand also.
