BJP alleges ₹3,500 crore scam in paddy purchase

KAKINADA: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Somu Veerraju on Saturday alleged that there is a scam of ₹3,500 crore per annum in purchase of paddy by millers and the civil supplies department in the state.

Speaking to reporters at Rajamahendravaram, he alleged that millers are purchasing paddy at ₹1,100 per 75 kilo bag from farmers. The millers are selling the same to Rythu Bharosa Kendras at ₹1,520 per bag at MSP. Millers are pocketing the excess amount.

Veerraju said the scam started after the Rice Millers’ Association leader had been made chairman of the Civil Supplies Corporation.

The BJP leader said he had previously revealed the fact, but the state government has not taken any action on it. He demanded that the state government release a white paper on paddy purchase and related issues immediately.

Veerraju also took the state government to task for supplying old gunny bags to farmers in the state even though central government had provided the state new gunny bags.
