Congress harming Opposition unity, says Kanam Rajendran

Rajendran said that LDF candidate C.Divakaran, who was way ahead in the campaign, would wrest the seat.

Alappuzha: “The Congress party is trying to weaken the unity of Opposition parties which want to keep the BJP out of power,” according to CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran.

“The LDF’s main opponent in Kerala is the UDF. The BJP had lost its deposit in Wayanad last time. So how can the NDA be a contender in Wayanad We are fighting to win. Let Rahul Gandhi win from Wayanad. Then we will decide whether to support him as a prime ministerial candidate,” he told reporters at the press club here on Saturday.

Referring to the Thiruvananthapuram seat where the CPI had ended up in the third place inviting a ‘paid seat’ controversy in 2014, Rajendran said that LDF candidate C.Divakaran, who was way ahead in the campaign, would wrest the seat.

“Sabarimala issue will have no impact on the elections,” he said. “The LDF performed well in the byelections held post- Sabarimala showing that it did not work for the BJP. The LDF government has not done anything wrong in the Sabarimala case. It was just implementing the Supreme Court order. Any government in India is bound to implement the top court order,” he said.

Responding to the controversy on the Amicus curiae report on the floods, he said that the amicus curiae is neither an expert nor a judge. “It's the central water commission which has expertise to take a view on such issues. Whoever leaked the report in this election time has an ulterior motive. So we do not take the report seriously,” he said.
