CHENNAI: City police registered cases against DMK working president M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu Congress president S. Thirunavukarasar and VCK leader Thirumavalavan for blocking roads during Cauvery protest, on Friday.
According to police sources, the Triplicane police filed cases against the leaders under sections 143 and 188 of IPC, and section 41 (6) of the Madras City Police Act. The police also booked as many as 3,000 party cadres for the blocking roads and unlawful assembly.
The development has come a day after the Opposition parties conducted statewide bandh demanding Cauvery Management Board (CMB) on Thursday. The Opposition leaders and cadres had blocked major arterial roads like Anna Salai and Kamarajar Salai disrupting traffic movement.
After blocking Anna Salai, the leaders and functionaries marched towards Marina Beach. However, police barricaded the road near Triplicane police station on Wallajah Road. Even though the police requested the protesters to disperse, they refused and blocked Kamarajar Road by removing barricades.
The wary police arrested the leaders and their followers to clear the road for traffic movement. Although the police had released all the leaders and cadres, they registered cases on Friday morning.
Meanwhile, the police sources said that the sections slapped on the leaders and other 3 persons are bailable. The police also registered cases against 5 unknown persons for injuring police personnel on duty.
