Rohingyas get fake voter ids, names deleted
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad District Election Officer (DEO) has zeroed down on 105 Rohingyas who have fraudulently obtained the voter ID cards in the city.
The DEO has deleted their names from the electoral roll and have warned of arresting them in case they are found exercising their vote.
“In case if a Rohingya who is marked in the ASD list comes to cast his/her vote, they will be immediately taken into custody and a case will be registered against them under the provisions of Section 31 of the RP Act,” said the DEO.
Rohingyas are an ethnic minority community in the northern Rakhine state of Myanmar and have been migrating to India as refugees since 2012. The Rohingya influx into Hyderabad started in 2013. Out of an estimated influx, about 5,025 Rohingyas are taking shelter in and around Hyderabad. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees is providing UNHCR ID cards to these Rohingya refugees in Hyderabad. Several Instances have come to notice where Rohingya refugees have fraudulently obtained Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) by enrolling themselves as voters by giving a false declaration stating that they are citizens of India. The EC has deleted their names.
