AIADMK ex-min's 3-year jail term in disproportionate wealth case suspended
Chennai: The Madras high court on Monday suspended the sentence of three years imprisonment awarded to former AIADMK minister C. Aranganayagam in the Rs 1.15 crore disproportionate wealth case.
Justice N.Sathish Kumar suspended the sentence while admitting an appeal filed by Aranganayagam, challenging an order of the trial court, convicting and sentencing him to under go 3 years imprisonment in the disproportionate wealth case.
The judge posted to June 28, further hearing of the case. The prosecution case was that Aranganayagam during his tenure as minister between 1991 and 1996 had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 1.15 crore in his name and in the names of his wife and two sons, disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Special Judge M. Gomathinayagam had on April 17, found Aranganayagam guilty of the offences and sentenced him to undergo 3 years imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 50,000. The judge however acquitted Kalaiselvi, Aranganayagam’s wife and his two sons Santhana Pandian and Murugan Adhiyaman in the case.
