BJP and AIADMK need each other: Karunanidhi

Mr Karunanidhi's comments came in the backdrop of BJP openly wooing the AIADMK, which has combined strength of 50 MPs in Parliament, to join the NDA.

Chennai: In the wake of speculation that AIADMK might join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi on Sunday wondered whether the first step for the alliance was taken when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa at her residence in August last.

Responding to a question on reports about the alliance, the DMK chief said the BJP needs AIADMK in New Delhi and the ruling party in TN needs BJP here.
“It looks like the first step (for the alliance) was taken when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley called on Ms Jayalalithaa at her residence (in Chennai). Mr Jaitley has been maintaining cordial relations with the Chief Minister,” he said.

He also said “political observers feel” that incidents related to seizure of money from the residence of Anbunathan, seizure of Rs 570 crore in containers, Election Commission “deliberately” helping the AIADMK and the Intelligence Bureau trying to create a rift between the DMK and Congress were signs of the two parties coming together.

Mr Karunanidhi’s comments came in the backdrop of BJP openly wooing the AIADMK, which has combined strength of 50 MPs in Parliament, to join the NDA.

He also questioned why the Tamil Nadu Police have not yet arrested Mr Anbunathan, who is allegedly close to leaders of the ruling party.
