Govt tampered with dam data, says Oommen Chandy

Chandy said Rahul’s fight was against the BJP and his primary opponent in Amethi is the BJP.

Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy on Friday accused the government of tampering with dams’ water flow data and other crucial details related to floods.

While making these allegations on the backdrop of the amicus curiae report against the government, he wanted a judicial inquiry as it recommended.

Speaking to reporters here he said that the government failed to raise the dam shutters between August 1 and 14 despite the Met department issuing a Red alert.

Tamil Nadu government affidavit in the Supreme Court quoting the Kerala government's State Load Dispatch Centre showed that the outflow from Idukki dam was 390 million cubic metres on August 15, 2018. However, now, the website shows the figure as 111.24," Mr Chandy said.

"There's a need to know the exact figures. If the outflow is 390 MCM, it would be 45 lakh litre per second. If it were 111.24 MCM, the outflow would be 13 lakh litre per second," he said.

Mr Chandy said Mr Rahul’s fight was against the BJP and his primary opponent in Amethi is the BJP.

"Mr Gandhi chose to fight from Wayanad following a demand to contest in South India. His candidature will help to prevent the BJP from gaining a foothold in South India," he said.

Mr Chandy said that Mr Gandhi's response to the CPM's indecent attack against him revealed his quality. People love leaders who show tolerance towards criticism and focus on development.

Mr Chandy said that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's latest remark against UDF leader N.K. Premachandran had ensured the latter's victory. "LDF's hate campaign will only benefit him," he said.

Reacting to LDF convener A. Vijayaraghav-an's sexist remarks against UDF candidate in Alathur Remya Haridas, Mr Chandy said that the people were outraged at his refusal to withdraw them.

He said that allegations against UDF candidate in Kozhikode, M.K. Ragha-van did not have evidential support.
