Congress adopting soft Hindutva line: LDF

The Left has accused the BJP of implementing its majoritarian communal agenda.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The LDF leadership has slammed the Congress and the BJP for politicising the Sabarimala issue. The Left leaders have pointed to the contradictions in the stand taken by the RSS and the BJP. While the RSS had welcomed the verdict and favoured entry of women of all age in temple, its political arm BJP is on the streets to oppose the verdict.

The Left has accused the BJP of implementing its majoritarian communal agenda. There is a deliberate attempt to portray the LDF Government as "anti Hindu."LDF convenor A Vijayraghavan said the government was only implementing the Supreme Court verdict. The apex court had heard all sides and examined all arguments before declaring its verdict.

The Left says basically the BJP is fighting against rule of law and judiciary. The stand of the party exposes its "anti women" mindset. The Left parties have also slammed the Congress for playing soft Hindutva politics. The state unit's stand was diametrically opposite to the position taken by the central leadership.

The AICC had earlier described the verdict to open the gates of the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala to women of all ages as "progressive" . It had categorically stated that there could be no discrimination to worship on the basis of gender. The Congress national leadership had termed the verdict as progressive and a step towards gender equality.

The party national spokesperson S SSurjewala had tweeted;'As society evolves, so should our religious beliefs and laws." But in Kerala the party leaders are planning to launch an agitation against the verdict and the LDF Government. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala has even gone to the extent of saying that Congress would go for review petition in the apex court. He favours status quo on the matter of women entry in temple.

Meanwhile, the LDF is devising a comprehensive strategy to expose the "dubious" stand of the Congress and BJP across the state by mobilising people's support.
