Kerala CPM against Congress support for Sitaram Yechury

Sitaram Yechury on Saturday said that the party's decision would be final on the issue.

Thiruvananthapuram: The CPM state secretariat is understood to have come out against fielding party general secretary Sitaram Yechury by taking Congress support and contest from West Bengal. The decision of the party state leadership to oppose such a move was because it was detrimental to the interest of the CPM in the state. Reacting to party's stand, general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Saturday said that the party's decision would be final on the issue.

Earlier the West Bengal State committee meeting of the CPM had sought a third Rajya Sabha term for Mr Yechury and the Congress had made it clear that it would support the CPM to the Rajya Sabha seat if Yechury was the candidate. The CPM polit bureau has scheduled a two-day meeting on June 6 and 7 to discuss the issue. Mr. Yechury is a Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal, and his term expired on August 18.

CPM State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan who was speaking to reporters at Delhi said that the party congress had taken a decision against any alliance with the Congress and BJP. The last meeting of the central committee had also taken a stand against any alliance with the Congress. The party had also taken a stand that the alliance with the Congress at West Bengal was a wrong decision, Mr Balakrishnan said.
