Tirupati: Women emerge as deciding factor in polls

Political parties depend on the support of women for win.

Tirupati: Though women politicians have held positions of power in India, women voters have never been at the centre of politics and no political party have really concentrated on them during the elections in the past. But, the scenario has been changed this time with women voters clearly outnumbering men voters in almost all the states.

They have emerged as a deciding factor in this election and now, all the political parties have to depend on the support of women to ensure their victory.

The situation is no different in Chittoor district, which has 14 assembly constituencies and 3 parliamentary constituencies with a total electoral of 30,25,222.

According to the recent data of Election Commission of India, (ECI), the number of women voters totals to 16,05,726, almost 28,620 more than men (15,77,106).

Interestingly, of the total 14 constituencies, the women voters clearly dominated men in as many as 12 constituencies except in G.D. Nellore and Kuppam, the home turf of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu.

Meanwhile, the total number of third gender voters in the district is 337.

The total number of voters in the district has increased from 30,25,222 to 31,83,169 with the addition of 1,57,947 voters with the enrolment of new voters taken up from January 11 to March 25, ahead of the election.

The temple city Tirupati has been at the top in the enrolment of new voters with 33,941 new voter applications being accepted. While Chandragiri is in the second position with 21,237 new enrolments, the Kuppam assembly constituency, from where TD national president is contesting, is at the bottom with 3,999 voters added after the publication of final list of voters on January 11.
