Karimnagar: After TRS, BJP calls off meet over poor turnout

The BJP, which has been gaining momentum recently in the district, had made elaborate arrangements for the public meeting.

Karimnagar: The public meeting which was supposed to be addressed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah at SRR College grounds here on Thursday at 11 am, in support of BJP Lok Sabha candidates, was cancelled suddenly.

The party’s national secretary, Muralidhar Rao, announced that Mr Shah was not able to visit Karimnagar because he had to suddenly attend a meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss the release of the party’s election manifesto.

But sources said the public meeting Mr Shah was supposed to address was cancelled after the organisers came to know that a low turnout of people was expected for the meeting.

The BJP, which has been gaining momentum recently in the district, had made elaborate arrangements for the public meeting. For the past few days, party leaders have been working hard to make the meeting a grand success and had tried to mobilise more people.

But from Wednesday night, for reasons the party does not want to disclose, the leaders who were in charge of mobilising the crowds did not respond properly and so people did not gather as expected by the state leadership. The sources said that due to the low turnout, Mr Shah cancelled his programme and expressed his anger at the state leadership for the poor arrangements.
