Congress will strive for victory in all 40 seats: KS Alagiri

Meanwhile, DMK president M.K. Stalin Sunday conveyed his wishes to Alagiri and his team of working presidents.

CHENNAI: The Congress will strive for the victory of its combine in all the 40 Lok Sabha seats, including the lone Puducherry constituency, newly appointed TNCC chief K.S. Alagiri said on Sunday.

“The first task before us is to evolve a strategy to secure all the 40 seats. Today our secular friends are aiming for 40 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Congress will strive hard to achieve this goal,” Alagiri told reporters here.

Asked about his priorities as TNCC’s new president, Alagiri replied, “My first target is to strengthen the party structure. A political party with a strong structure alone will emerge victorious. I will be working with other senior leaders for this,” he said.

Training his guns on the BJP and AIADMK, he said both the regimes have hampered development in the country and State. He alleged that both the Central and State governments lacked understanding of economics, agriculture and society. “As a result, there is backwardness in almost all sectors. Development has taken a back seat in agriculture, while GST has irked the middleclass and unemployment has increased,” he added.

Thanking Congress president Rahul Gandhi for appointing him as the new president of TNCC (replacing Su. Thirunavukkarasar), he said, “In the last four decades of political life as a Congressman, I have continued to be a simple party worker.” He also thanked former Union Minister P. Chidambaram and AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik for his elevation.

Meanwhile, DMK president M.K. Stalin Sunday conveyed his wishes to Alagiri and his team of working presidents. “I convey my heartful wishes to former Lok Sabha MP K.S. Alagiri for his appointment as TNPCC president,” Stalin said in a statement, extending his wishes to four other appointees too.
