It's all in the family as husband-wife, brothers win Telangana Assembly polls
Hyderabad: Political families in Telangana retained their turfs in Assembly polls with members from the same family getting elected as MLAs.
Congress MP N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and his wife Padmavathi Reddy won from Huzurnagar and Kodad constituencies respectively, repeating their 2014 Assembly polls performance. In 2018, however, while Uttam Kumar Reddy won Huzurnagar, but Padmavathi Reddy lost from Kodad.
Later, Uttam Kumar Reddy successfully contested from Nalgonda Lok Sabha seat in 2019, and quit as MLA. In the bypoll this necessitated, in October 2019, Padmavathi Reddy contested from Huzurnagar and lost again.
It is after a gap of five years that the couple made it to the Legislative Assembly together.
Minister Ch Malla Reddy and his son-in-law Marri Rajashekar Reddy won from Medchal and Malkajgiri respectively. Rajashekar Reddy was a surprise pick by the BRS leadership for Malkajgiri seat after incumbent legislator Mynampally Hanumanth Rao quit the party against the refusal to nominate hisson Mynampally Rohit from Medak.
Hanumanth Rao joined the Congress along with his son and and secured tickets from Malkajgiri and Medak. While Hanumanth Rao lost from Malkajigiri, his son Rohith won.
The Komatireddy brothers registered a bumper victory in Nalgonda district. Venkat Reddy wrested Nalgonda seat from the BRS, which he had lost in 2018. Rajgopal Reddy who won on a Congress ticket from Munugode in 2018, quit the party and the seat in 2022 and joined the BJP. In the bypoll he forced, he lost to the BRS last year. He rejoined the Congress recently in October, and avenged the defeat at Munugode.
The Venkataswamy brothers G. Vivek and G. Vinod won from Chennur and Mancherial seats respectively. Vivek was Congress MP from 2009 to 2014, joined the BRS, shifted to BJP and rejoined the Congress. He secured ticket from Chennur and won the seat with a thumping majority, defeating Balka Suman of the BRS.
Vinod was Congress MLA from 2004 to 2009. He served as minister in the Y.S. Rajashekar Reddy Cabinet. He joined in the BRS in 2016 and returned to the Congress in January 2020. He defeated Durgam Chinnaiah (BRS) by over 36,000 votes at Bellampalli.
Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao won from Gajwel for the third consecutive term while his son K.T. Rama Rao won from Sircilla for the fifth time, including a bypoll.
Chandrashekar Rao's nephew T. Harish Rao won from Siddipet for the seventh term, including three bypolls, by over 82,000 votes.
