DMK opposes acceptance of AIADMK candidates' nominations

DMK functionaries objected the petition on grounds that thumb impression of party chief cannot be affixed as per rules.

Chennai: DMK on Thursday opposed the acceptance of nominations of arch rival AIADMK's candidates in three constituencies, which are going for polls on November 19 when nominations were taken up for scrutiny by election authorities.

Returning Officer for Thanjavur constituency C Suresh told PTI that DMK functionaries objected the petition on grounds that thumb impression of party chief cannot be affixed (in Forms A,B) as per rules. DMK also objected that the attestation was not in order.

Suresh said he apprised the DMK functionaries about the letter of Election Commission which allowed the acceptance of forms A, B even if it had thumb impression.

The Election Commission had earlier allowed a prayer of AIADMK to permit affixation of party chief Jayalalithaa's thumb impression in the place of her signature.

Overruling objections, the papers of AIADMK nominees were accepted in the three constituencies. Also, the nominations of DMK nominees were also found to be in order.

Nominations of a total of 91 candidates including that of the nominees of major parties were accepted in three Assembly segments of Aravakkurichi, Thanjavur and Thirupparankundram, in Tamil Nadu for the November 19 polls after scrutiny.

In Thanjavur 21 nominations were rejected out of the total 36. In Aravakkurichi, out of the 59 nominations 13 were rejected and in Thirupparankundram 14 were rejected out of the total 44.

DMK advocates told reporters in Thanjavur and Aravakkurichi that legal action will be contemplated in the matter in view of the acceptance of the papers of AIADMK nominees.

A DMK leader told PTI in Chennai that his party functionaries had requested poll authorities to furnish in writing the reasons for accepting the nominations of AIADMK candidates.

He said no direction could be given by poll authorities to returning officers to accept nominations. The DMK leader said based on the response of EC authorities further legal action will be contemplated.

Campaign of ruling AIADMK and main opposition DMK meanwhile picked up pace with the acceptance of nominations on Thursday.
