Karnataka: Session today, all parties to sing in chorus, no new board

CM Siddaramaiah said the state was the \"victim\" and not the villain in the Cauvery river water dispute as was being portrayed.

Bengaluru: The special session of the state legislature convened on Monday, is expected to toe the line set by Saturday’s all-party meeting on the Cauvery issue, which decided not to release water to Tamil Nadu and reserve it for drinking purposes.

The ruling Congress is also likely to seek the support of the opposition JD(S) and BJP to pass a unanimous resolution opposing the constitution of Cauvery Water Management Board which would take away the state’s powers to control outflow from its reservoirs in the Cauvery basin. The apex court had directed the Centre to constitute CWMB by October 4 with representatives from the riparian states including Karnataka, which has not nominated its representative so far.

Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah said the state was the "victim" and not the villain in the Cauvery river water dispute as was being portrayed. "Some people at the national and international levels are saying Karnataka is not releasing water to Tamil Nadu. In a way, they are suggesting that Karnataka is the villain. But, in reality, the state has been the victim and has been meted out injustice," he said.
