Kuppam disturbances not serious law and order issues, says DGP

Referring to recent incidents in Kuppam, he said they were not strong enough to spark a law and order problem

Nellore: DGP Rajendranath said on Friday that enhancing the security of former CM Chandrababu Naidu is not under the state police’s purview.

Referring to recent incidents in Kuppam, he said they were not strong enough to spark a law and order problem and those involved in them were locals.

The DGP was responding to questions from the media after a crime review meeting he held with police officers of Tirupati and Chittoor districts in Tirupati.

Pointing to the report about ganja destroyed in 7500 acres in Alluri Seetharama Raju district, he said the police were encouraging the farmers to switch over to alternative crops under ‘Operation Parivarthan’ programme.

“We are targeting farmers cultivating Ganja in 7 mandals of the district, to encourage them to opt instead for horticulture crops. The government is supplying seeds with 90 per cent subsidy through Rythu Bharosa Kendrams for this purpose,” he said.

He said production and sale of ID liquor came down by 80 to 85 per cent following invocation of the PD act against 109 persons involved in the illegal activity by the Special Enforcement Bureau and the police.

Expressing satisfaction over considerable drop in the crime rate and road accidents in Tirupati and Chittoor district, he said that the numerical data rovided by the officers indicated the sharp decline in these cases.

He said the police were arranging barricades at the junction points where lanes and by-lanes joined the highways, especially accident-prone areas, to avoid accidents.

The DGP praised the officers of the two districts for strengthening the communication network to obtain information on a regular basis from faction-linked areas.
