League throws in gauntlet

Allies decide to wait till official decision after two-day meet of KC(M).

Thiruvanantapuram: Though the UDF allies seem have a fair idea of the outcome of the two-day camp of Kerala Congress (M) at Charalkunnu on August 6-7, they are waiting for the official reaction to come during the weekend before making any further move.

Muslim League leader P.K. Kunhalikutty has said that there is nothing the allies can do but wait for the outcome.

Mr Kunhalikutty and KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran expressed hope that K.M. Mani will not take any drastic decision to leave the UDF. Mr Kunhalikutty said that it is true that there are 'some' issues in the UDF, but hoped that "Mani will not leave the front."

"It will be a disastrous decision for them if they decide to join hands with the BJP," said Mr Kunhalikutty who is acting as an intermediary along with former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

Mr Kunhalikutty added that he would wait till the party's crucial two-day camp at Charalkkunnu ends.

On Monday, KC (M) senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Joy Abraham had alleged the Congress leaders of hatching a conspiracy to weaken the party and Mr Mani. He said the party would decide on all issues at its crucial two-day camp at Charalkkunnu this weekend, including the demand within the party to severe ties with Congress and UDF and sit as a separate block in the state Assembly.

However, UDF allies are peeved with the Congress leadership lackluster attitude in dealing with the issue. Many believe that Congress leadership should have acted much earlier.

A prominent UDF leader told this paper that the issues started brewing in the UDF more than a year ago and now the situation has gone out of control as indicated by Mr Mani's four-day stay at Christeen Retreat Centre at Kalathipady in Kottayam during which he has remained incommunicado.

Johnny Nellore, Kerala Congress (Jacob) chairman told DC that the Congress leadership did not even hold seat sharing talks with all the allies in the manner it should have happened.

"Congress leadership should have dealt the situation with Mani much more seriously. They should have made the AICC leadership intervene at an earlier stage itself. Now, the situation has gone out of control and they approached it lackadaisically. All the allies have got various complaints against the Congress," said Mr Nellore.
