Kerala assembly speaker to be elected today

The entire swearing-in ceremony lasted for nearly two- and-a-half hours and the House adjourned for the day.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first session of the 14th Kerala Assembly began on Thursday with the swearing-in of elected members. The election of the Speaker will be held on Friday. Mr P. Sreeramakrishnan of the CPM filed his nomination as the LDF candidate and V.P. Sajeendran of the Congress as the UDF candidate.

With the LDF having a clear majority in the House, it would be a cakewalk for Mr Sreeramakrishnan, who represents the Ponnani constituency. The stand of the lone BJP MLA O. Rajagopal and independent P.C. George during the voting could be interesting.

Mr. Sreeramakrishnan called on veteran CPM leader V.S. Achuthanandan after filing his nomination. CPM’s S. Sarma was sworn-in as protem Speaker by Governor P. Sathasivam. The swearing-in of Mr O. Rajagopal, actor-turned CPM candidate Mukesh and journalist-turned CPM candidate Veena George were the highlights of the ceremony.

The youngest member in the House and JNU student Muhammed Muhassin received applause from both the UDF and LDF members as he was invited to take the oath. The entire swearing-in ceremony lasted for nearly two- and-a-half hours and the House adjourned for the day.
