Tamil Nadu governor convenes Assembly meet at Kalaivanar Arangam on Sept 14

Chennai: Governor Banwarilal Purohit has convened the next session of the State Assembly on Monday, September 14, 10 am, at the Kalaivanar Arangam on Wallajah Road.

The session would be held at the multi-purpose hall on the third floor of Kalaivanar Arangam situated inside the Omandurar Government Estates, a notification from the Assembly Secretary K Seenivasan said on Tuesday.

The venue has been shifted in view of the prevailing pandemic condition and for maintaining social distancing effectively. The usual hall in Fort St George, where the Assembly meets, is too crammed and MLAs might not be able to keep physical distance from one another.

So the government looked for an alternative venue and finalized Kalaivanar Arangam as the multi-purpose hall with a seating capacity of 1000 would be ideal to maintain social distancing. Also it is situated closer to the MLAs Hostel, situated on the other end of the sprawling government estate premises.

The earlier session of the Assembly was held from March 9 when the debates on the demands for grants for various departments on the Budget was held. The Budget was presented earlier on February 8.

Even as the session was on, the Coronavirus outbreak started and the House was adjourned close to the country going for the lockdown. Several MLAs were infected by Coronavirus and J Anbalagan of the DMK, representing Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency, passed away on June 10.

The coming session will be crucial for the present AIADMK government, whose term would come to an end by May next year, as they would have to take decisions and pass bills that would help them win the popularity of the people. So a lot of announcements are expected to be made in this session.
