Bhubaneswar: At a time when the three major political parties in Odisha are leaving no stone unturned to woo voters ahead of the upcoming polls, BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday reaffirmed his confidence of winning the elections.
In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on Sunday that Odisha will have results like Tripura, Patnaik said BJD will perform very well in the upcoming elections.
“We (BJD) will do very well in elections as I said before. We will do very well, you will see,” said the BJD chief.
Referring to BJP’s poll prospects in Odisha in the upcoming general elections, Modi had on said Odisha will be the second Tripura, where the BJP won a comfortable majority in the last Assembly elections, dismantling the Left Front government of 25 years.
“Odisha Hindustan ko surprise kar dega, Is baar Odisha dusra Tripura ban jayega. (Odisha will surprise India. It will become a second Tripura),” said the PM while addressing ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ programme via video conferencing from Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi.
In 2013, in the Tripura Assembly elections the BJP polled only 1.5 per cent votes and could not win a single seat. The saffron party polled 43 per cent votes in 2018 elections and went on to win 36 of the 60 seats and formed the government.
In the 147-member Odisha Legislative Assembly, the BJP has 10 members. It had polled 18 per cent votes. The BJD secured 43.4 per cent and secured 117 seats. The Congress finished second with 25.7 per cent votes and got 16 seats, 10 less than its 2009 tally.
Assembly elections in Odisha are going to be held simultaneously with Lok Sabha elections.
