MDMK, CPM condemn police for slapping of sedition case against six activist

Referring to both cases, Mr Vaiko said he “strongly condemnedâ€the police action.

Chennai: MDMK and CPI (M) on Friday condemned police for slapping of sedition case against six activists of an anti-liquor group for allegedly making incendiary speeches at a recent meet to demand closure of state-run liquor outlets.

Even at the fag end of the Jayalailthaa’s government tenure, the
government continues to stifle the voices of protest against liquor, MDMK general secretary Vaiko said in a statement. He also pointed out that last October, political campaigner Kovan was arrested on sedition charges and for allegedly singing a defamatory song against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa over liquor issue.

Referring to both cases, Mr Vaiko said he “strongly condemned” the police action. “The case against Makkal Adhikaram activists should be withdrawn immediately,” he said, adding the people would show their resolve against such things in the May 16 polls. CPI (M) has demanded the dropping of sedition charges against the anti-liquor campaigners and also sought action against the police officers who filed false case.
