People living close to water bodies are facing innumerable problems because of inundation

NELLORE: Owing to heavy rains during last three days, several low-lying areas and standing crops in Nellore district continue remaining under floodwaters in various mandals. Majority of rivulets and streams are in spate.

In particular, people living close to water bodies are facing innumerable problems because of inundation. Many villages have got cut-off. The worst-hit areas include Gudur, Rapur, Manubole, Sydapuram and Podalakur.

Sydadupalli in Rapur mandal has got heavily inundated with floodwater. Condition of people living in BC and ST colonies in the village is really dismal.

A youth identified as Sardar of Vangallu village in Sangam mandal got washed away in floodwaters of a stream on Monday. Lamenting over the youth’s demise, industries minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy appealed to people not to venture into streams or water bodies. He said efforts are being made to rescue people from marooned areas.

Meanwhile, there has been a respite from the heavy downpour since Monday night. This has enabled officials to start on relief operations. Nellore Municipal Corporation has launched operations to clear waterlogged areas. Workers and earth moving machines have been deployed.

CPI district joint secretary D. Ankaiah said as many as 30 people have died in the district due to heavy rains. He demanded compensation of ₹ 5 lakh to each family. He criticised authorities for offering compensation to only a few families so far.
