Split in Congress comes to fore
The differences within the Congress came to the fore on Saturday at a meeting of AICC functionaries and party leaders in charge of Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in the state held at Gandhi Bhavan. The meetings were attended by TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and AICC general secretary and Telangana Congress affairs in-charge R.C. Khuntia.
At the meeting for Warangal constituency, Mr Uttam introduced Katti Venkata Swamy as in-charge of Narsampet assembly constituency. To this, Mr Madhava Reddy objected saying how the party could accord equal status to him and a person could not even get 4,000 votes in the previous elections.
In the previous elections, Mr Swamy contested from the constituency as Congress candidate but lost while independent candidate Mr Donthi Madhava Reddy won the seat. After elections, Mr Madhava Reddy joined the Congress.
In the Khammam constituency review, former Union Minister Renuka Chowdary who won the seat in last elections, objected fielding former minister Vanama Venkateswar Rao, saying that he had contested against the party candidate. MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy said Mr Vanama had contested against CPI candidate and that he was former minister and the party should utilise the services of such leaders.
When some leaders raised issues in their constituencies, Mr Khuntia said it will be discussed at the next meeting.
