Tamil Nadu CM discusses Cauvery issue with Guv ahead of Delhi visit

The CM will be travelling to the national capital on May 2 to participate in the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Chennai: Ahead of his New Delhi visit on May 2 to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami called on Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday and discussed several key issues including the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

The meeting at the Raj Bhavan here on Monday evening comes in the wake of Centre approaching the Supreme Court seeking clarification on ‘scheme’ mentioned in its verdict on Cauvery water dispute case. It is said Mr. Palaniswami took up the matter with Mr. Purohit.

The CM will be travelling to the national capital on May 2 to participate in the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, for which Mr. Modi has invited Chief Ministers of all states to discuss various schemes to be implemented throughout the country. Sources claim the issue of forming the CMB would be discussed during the meeting.

On Sunday while speaking to reporters in Salem after laying a foundation stone for a memorial of AIADMK founder M. G. Ramachandran and late CM J. Jayalalithaa, Mr. Palaniswami had said the PMO had not responded to a request seeking his appointment for an all-party delegation from Tamil Nadu to urge him to set up the CMB.

Recently, when Mr Modi visited the city to inaugurate the DefExpo 2018, the CM had submitted a memorandum requesting him to form the CMB. This is the CM's third memorandum to Mr. Modi on the issue in the last two months.

Ayyar takes charge as local bodies Ombudsman: Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday evening administered the oath of office to S. Ayyar, a retired IAS officer, who was appointed as the local bodies ombudsman to tackle corruption in the local bodies in Tamil Nadu.

Besides Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Deputy CM O. Panneerselvam and state ministers, chief secretary Giriga Vaithanathan and officials participated in the function held at Raj Bhavan here.
