Tamil Nadu polls: 4,581 nominations accepted

Totally, 2,568 nominations were rejected and 4,581 papers accepted.

Chennai: According to election department sources, as many as 7,136 nominations were taken up for scrutiny. During the process that began for all the 234 constituencies 6,343 papers submitted by men and 789 affidavits furnished by women were verified. Four nominations were filed by the third gender.

Totally, 2,568 nominations were rejected and 4,581 papers accepted. Tension prevailed in Mylapore and Saidapet after the agents of ruling AIADMK raised objections in affidavits submitted by DMK and Congress candidates. Poll officials pacified them. After double check the affidavits were accepted on technical grounds, a senior official said.

R K Nagar constituency, where Jayalalithaa is in fray, saw 47 nominations being accepted. The highest rejection of poll papers was in Kolathur constituency, where DMK leader Stalin is contesting. Most of the seats in Central Tamil Nadu spread over Delta districts and Assembly segments of Virudhunagar, Sattur, Tiruchuli saw no rejection of candidates.

The last date for withdrawal of nominations is May 2. The final list of candidates will be notified the next day. Subsequently, the photos of candidates with their names will be sent for inclusion in ballot units to help voters during polling.
