Centre's insistence for 3 months' time unacceptable: D Jayakumar

The Centre's demand for three months to implement the judgment has shocked and anguished the people of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: Wondering why the Centre, which appeared to be concerned about Karnataka's feelings, failed to understand Tamil Nadu's emotions on forming the Cauvery Management Board (CMB), fisheries minister D. Jayakumar said the Centre's insistence for three months' time to comply with the Feb. 16 order of the SC, is “unacceptable.”

“TN is the first to file contempt petition seeking action against the Centre for not forming the CMB. Even the neighbouring Puducherry is planning to initiate the contempt on Monday, but today, immediately after the Supreme Court mandated deadline ended, we moved the court requesting it to initiate contempt proceedings against the Central government,” Mr. Jayakumar said on Saturday.

Asserting that the State government is taking all steps to protect the rights of Tamil Nadu on the Cauvery water, Mr Jayakumar said, there was no need for his government to be apprehensive of the political implications in taking on the Centre on the issue. “The verdict delivered by the Supreme Court is crystal clear.

The Centre's demand for three months to implement the judgment has shocked and anguished the people of Tamil Nadu. Amma's government will oppose this,” Mr. Jayakumar told reporters here reacting to the plea filed by the Centre in the Supreme Court.

He said in the contempt, TN had sought action on the Union Cabinet secretary and Union Water Resources Secretary, too.
