PM Modi Looks Forward To Meet Putin at SCO Summit
He said the Prime Minister also looked forward to welcoming Putin to the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, scheduled to be held less than three weeks later.
New Delhi: External affairs minister S. Jaishankar on Monday called on Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and handed him a personal communication from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Jaishankar conveyed that Modi looked forward to meeting the Russian President at the SCO Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on August 31 and September 1. He said the Prime Minister also looked forward to welcoming Putin to the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, scheduled to be held less than three weeks later.
According to Russian media reports, Putin hailed the strong ties between the two countries and said Russia was prepared to increase fertiliser supplies to meet the needs of India’s agricultural sector.
“We are doing everything to close this issue for Indian farmers and agriculture. We are increasing these supplies and are ready to do this further,” he was quoted as saying.
Earlier on Monday, Jaishankar and Russian first deputy prime minister Denis Manturov co-chaired the 27th session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation in Moscow.
Jaishankar told Putin that the meeting had yielded a “good report” on bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, fertilisers, nuclear energy and other sectors.
“Let me begin by conveying the good wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has given me a personal communication, which I would like to hand over to you,” Jaishankar said.
He added that economic cooperation between the two countries had grown significantly.
“Prime Minister Modi looks forward to meeting you at the SCO Summit, then welcoming you to India for the BRICS Summit and, in due course, as per your mutual convenience, having the annual summit,” he said.
Putin said the high-level visits reflected the strength of India-Russia relations, which had developed over several decades. He noted that the two countries continued to cooperate through governmental, parliamentary and economic channels.
According to reports, Putin also said bilateral trade had continued to grow in 2026, with cooperation expanding across “almost all areas”.
Jaishankar also met Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov during his two-day visit to Moscow, which concluded on Monday.
