“The cultural identity of Chhattisgarh has been established at the global level when the tribal art of Bastar became part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic presents”, an official spokesman here said.
Mr. Modi met Mr. Luxon during his visit to New Zealand on July 11.
“It is a matter of pride for Chhattisgarh. The tribal culture, folk tradition and traditional handicrafts now represent the cultural identity of India at the global level. Mr. Modi’s diplomatic present of Bastar’s Dhokra handicraft to New Zealand PM Mr. Luxon amply demonstrates it”, an official of the state culture department said.
Bastar’s Dhokra art is an ancient 4,000-year-old lost-wax metal casting craft originating from the region.
Produced by the local Ghadwa (metalsmith) artisans in Bastar, it features intricate bronze and brass figurines.
Using no pre-existing molds across 16 to 27 intricate steps, each handcrafted piece is entirely unique and highly valued.
The Dhokra art holds the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
What makes Bastar’s Dhokra art unique is the meticulous, cent percent handcrafted production method.
The art highlights the rich tribal lifestyle of Bastar, heavily influenced by nature and mythology.
The Chhattisgarh government has undertaken several measures to promote Bastar’s rich art and culture at the national and international levels.
