Parents Worried Over Reported Attacks on Kashmiri Students; Netas Too Are Concerned

Srinagar: The reports of Kashmiri students being harassed and even assaulted by organised mobs in different parts of the country following the Pahalgam carnage has made their parents back home worried about their safety and well-being.
Numerous videos showing Kashmiri students being attacked have surfaced on social media platforms. A video in which an activist of a right-wing Hindu outfit can be heard threatening the Kashmiris and asking them to leave Uttarakhand by 10 am on Thursday has also gone viral.
Following the calls for intervention, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Thursday that he is in touch with his counterparts of the states where disturbing incidents have been reported from.
In a post on ‘X’, the Chief Minister said, “The J&K government is in touch with the governments of the states where these reports are originating from. I’m also in touch with my counterpart Chief Ministers in these states & have requested they take extra care.”
Former Chief Minister and People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said that she spoke with the Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting him to intervene in the wake of certain elements openly threatening Kashmiri students and traders.
“Spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah to extend my deepest condolences & also express solidarity with bereaved families of the Pahalgam terror attack. We stand with the nation in this hour of mourning. Also requested him to intervene in the wake of certain elements openly threatening Kashmiri students & traders across various states," she wrote on ‘X’. She added, “Urged him to intervene without delay to ensure their safety & protection wherever such incidents are being reported.”
Former minister and J&K People’s Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone also voiced his concern over the reports of Kashmiri students being harassed in different parts of the country. “There have been many incidents across the country wherein Kashmiri students are being harassed, beaten up, bullied and even asked to vacate their residential premises. I request the union government to please ensure the safety of Kashmiri students,” he said.
Kashmir’s chief Muslim cleric and chairman of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that fear and distress being expressed by Kashmiris, especially students, “who are being attacked in the aftermath of the dastardly Pahalgam incident as seen on videos circulating is deeply concerning.” He urged the concerned authorities to “immediately intervene and ensure their safety and protection.”
Meanwhile, an official spokesman in Jammu said that Resident Commission, J&K Government New Delhi has established a helpline for the students of J&K studying across the country. The spokesman said that a communiqué received from Resident Commission reads, "the students hailing from J&K, studying in different states, may contact on following telephone numbers of Jammu and Kashmir Resident Commission, New Delhi in case of any help/assistance:

According to the Resident Commission, these numbers shall remain operational 24/7 for any kind of assistance.

While speaking to reporters later during the day here, Chief Minister Mr. Abdullah said, "I request the people of India not to consider people of Kashmir their enemies. If the Centre is saying that the attack was done by Pakistan, then why the youth and the students of J&K are being targeted in the outside states. It should be stopped."

He added, "People of Jammu and Kashmir are not enemies of peace. Whatever happened did not took place with our wish. We have to come out of this."

Mr. Abdullah reiterated that his government sympathises with the bereaved families and said, "Be, it the local civilian who took bullets to protect our guests or the tourists who had came here to enjoy the vacations, we are pained at the loss of innocent lives and have condemned this gory incidents in strongest words".
