Odisha: Woman Allegedly Killed by Throat-Slitting in Broad Daylight
Police are questioning the accused and examining statements from eyewitnesses to ascertain the sequence of events and the motive behind the killing.
Bhubaneswar: A woman was allegedly killed by a man who slit her throat with a sharp weapon in broad daylight at Bagdihi Chhak in Baripada city of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Sunday, triggering panic among local residents.
According to preliminary information, the woman had gone to meet the accused when the two were sitting and talking on the roadside. The man allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon following an altercation, leaving her critically injured.
The woman, who suffered profuse bleeding, managed to reach a nearby establishment seeking help. She later succumbed to her injuries.
Police reached the spot after being alerted and took the accused into custody. The identity of the deceased woman has not yet been officially disclosed.
The exact relationship between the accused and the woman and the circumstances leading to the attack are yet to be established.
While preliminary reports suggested that the two were in a relationship, police were yet to officially confirm this.
A woman who was present nearby, identified as Poma Soren, recounted the incident.
“The incident occurred at around noon. They were sitting and talking to each other. They were talking nicely.
Then I cannot say what suddenly happened. Since I was inside doing my duty, she came running to me,” Soren said.
The injured woman asked her to “save” her, Soren said, adding that she helped her sit down and gave her some water.
“I then saw that her throat was deeply cut. I ran to the spot, brought her bedsheet and tied it around her neck,” Soren said.
Soren said she asked the woman about her relationship with the man, but she initially did not respond.
“Finally, she said, ‘I love him.’ That’s all she said,” Soren added.
The body was taken into police custody for postmortem examination. Police are questioning the accused and examining statements from eyewitnesses to ascertain the sequence of events and the motive behind the killing.
