Odisha Unveils Ambitious Aviation Expansion: New Greenfield Airport In Paradip, 15 Heliports

The proposed Paradip airport is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity and strengthen Odisha’s position in the national aviation network.

Bhubaneswar, May 2: In a decisive move to upgrade the state’s aviation infrastructure, the Odisha government has announced plans for a new greenfield airport in Paradip. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, chairing a key meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan on Friday evening, emphasised the government's commitment to developing aviation facilities that meet global standards, with a focus on modernisation and capacity enhancement.

The proposed Paradip airport is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity and strengthen Odisha’s position in the national aviation network. Alongside this, the Chief Minister directed the swift advancement of the Shri Jagannath Airport project in Puri, a priority initiative aimed at improving connectivity to the popular pilgrim and tourist destination.
In a broader strategy to enhance aerial access across the state, the government also announced plans to develop heliports in 15 districts. This initiative is intended to improve intra-state connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
Further discussions during the meeting addressed the future development of the Biju Patnaik Aviation Centre at the Birashole airstrip in Dhenkanal, with the public works department appointed as the nodal agency to expedite the project.
Upgradation plans for Rourkela Airport were also reviewed, alongside proposals to enhance infrastructure at several other key airports in Jeypore, Dandabose, Rangeilunda, Gotama, Satibhata, Raisuan, Tushara, Jamadarpali, Malkangiri, Amarda Road, and Utkela.
Chief Minister Majhi reiterated his government’s vision to establish world-class aviation facilities across Odisha, encompassing airports, heliports, and drone hubs. The meeting also proposed a reorganisation of the Directorate of Civil Aviation, aimed at creating modern infrastructure and strengthening human resources to support the state’s growing aviation sector.
