Odisha Renames Biju Setu Yojana As Setu Bandhan Yojana

The rural development department issued a formal notification giving effect to the renaming as well as the extension of the scheme.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has renamed the Biju Setu Yojana, the State’s flagship rural bridge construction programme, as the Setu Bandhan Yojana and approved its continuation for another five years from 2026-27 to 2030-31.

The rural development department issued a formal notification giving effect to the renaming as well as the extension of the scheme.

The Biju Setu Yojana was launched in 2011-12 with the objective of improving rural connectivity by constructing bridges at locations where rivers, streams and other geographical barriers hindered the movement of people and vehicles.

Over the years, the programme has focused on providing all-weather connectivity to villages and improving access to markets, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and other essential services.

Under the renewed programme, bridge construction and related connectivity works will continue across rural Odisha during the five-year period.

The government has retained the broader objective of strengthening rural infrastructure and improving connectivity under the new nomenclature.

The decision to rename the scheme comes amid the State government’s efforts to expand road and bridge infrastructure and improve last-mile connectivity in rural areas.

The Setu Bandhan Yojana will now serve as the framework for implementation of rural bridge projects from 2026-27 through 2030-31.
