Odisha: GM University Assistant Professor Held For Allegedly Exploiting Student

In her complaint, the student alleged that the teacher established a physical relationship with her after emotionally manipulating her with false assurances of marriage, only to later back out.

Bhubaneswar: An assistant professor of GM University, Sambalpur, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly sexually exploiting a female student after promising to marry her.

The accused, identified as Gopikant Suna of the university’s Education Department, was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by a 20-year-old second-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) student.

Sambalpur Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo confirmed the arrest and said a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). A detailed investigation is currently underway.

According to police sources, the student, who resides in a rented accommodation in the Angulalane area of Sambalpur, filed the first information report (FIR) around 2.36 pm on Wednesday. In her complaint, she alleged that Suna established a physical relationship with her after emotionally manipulating her with false assurances of marriage, only to later back out.

The student further alleged that she later came to know about similar instances involving other female students, which caused her immense mental distress. She accused the professor of habitually misusing his official position to exploit students.

Suna, a native of Dahita village under Boden police limits in Bargarh district, had joined GM University as an assistant professor on December 18, 2023. He was staying at the Professor Colony in the Budharaja area of Sambalpur at the time of his arrest.
