Odisha: From The Netherlands To Athagarh: Polish Woman Embraces Odia Traditions In A Cross-Border Love Story

Subal Beura, a native of Mahalakshmipur village in Cuttack district's Athagarh, first met Diana, a young Polish woman, at a restaurant in the Netherlands. Their friendship gradually blossomed into love, and they decided to spend their lives together.

While Subal's family readily accepted the relationship, Diana's parents were initially hesitant. To win their confidence, Subal undertook a nearly 1,100-km road journey to her hometown in Poland. His sincerity eventually convinced them to bless the marriage.

The couple exchanged vows in Athagarh following traditional Odia customs. Dressed in a bridal saree with sindoor, mehendi, alta and a red veil, Diana embraced every ritual—from sitting before the sacred fire to taking the seven pheras—with remarkable ease, winning the admiration of relatives and villagers.

Although Diana's elderly parents could not travel to India due to age and logistical constraints, they remained part of the celebration through technology. The entire ceremony was livestreamed on YouTube, allowing them to witness their daughter's wedding and bless the newlyweds from their village in Poland.

"My in-laws have never travelled by air and do not have passports or visas. Since they couldn't come to India, we livestreamed the wedding on YouTube and shared the link with them. They watched every moment from Poland and blessed us," Subal said.

Reflecting on their journey, Subal noted the cultural differences between the two countries.

“In Odisha, weddings usually take place soon after families agree. In Poland, couples generally spend more time together before marriage to understand each other better and build a strong relationship,” he said.

For Diana, the ceremony marked more than a marriage.

“It marks the beginning of a new life for me. I am overwhelmed by the warmth and affection I have received here,” she said.
