Odisha CM Inaugurates IMFA’s Kalinganagar Project

Greenfield plant operationalised in 15 months, making IMFA India’s largest ferro chrome producer

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday inaugurated Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd’s (IMFA) greenfield ferro chrome project at Kalinganagar, making the company India’s largest producer of value-added ferro chrome, with an annual capacity exceeding 5 lakh tonnes.

Construction of the project began on May 22, 2025, following its groundbreaking ceremony by the Chief Minister. The first furnace achieved production on August 25, 2026, within 458 days of the commencement of construction.

The project generated around 4.5 lakh man-days of employment during construction and is expected to create 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, the company said.

“The inauguration of the greenfield project is a significant milestone in our growth journey, making IMFA the country’s largest producer of value-added ferro chrome and placing it among the leading global players,” said Subhrakant Panda, managing director of IMFA.

He thanked the Odisha government and its agencies for their support in commissioning the project within 15 months, while acknowledging the dedication of the project team.

Panda said the plant’s state-of-the-art closed furnaces were designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Off-gas-based power generation, combined with hybrid renewable energy, is expected to help lower the facility’s carbon footprint.

Ferro chrome, an essential raw material in stainless steel manufacturing, plays a key role in strengthening India’s industrial and manufacturing capabilities.
