Nine Dead Due to Water Contamination in Indore: Vijayavargiya

Officials said that 162 people affected by water contamination were undergoing treatment in different hospitals.

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh urban administration minister Kailash Vijayvargiya confirmed the death of nine people due to water contamination at Indore, often voted India’s cleanest city. Unofficial reports put the death toll at 13.

Officials said that 162 people affected by water contamination were undergoing treatment in different hospitals.

Indore district chief medical and health officer (CMHO) Dr Madhav Prasad Hassani said that the lab report on the water samples collected from the affected areas for tests had confirmed that the deaths had occurred due to consumption of contaminated water.

He said that water contamination was caused due to the leakage in the pipeline, providing drinking water to the affected area.

Vijayvargiya, the local MLA, said that sewage contaminated the drinking water provided through the pipeline in Bhagirathipura area. BJP MP from Indore Shankar Lalwani said that a “deadly virus” was found in the water samples taken from the affected area, without providing details.

Vijayvargiya told the media that 1,400 to 1,500 people were affected, of whom around 200 were admitted to hospitals. All the patients were out of danger and were being discharged as their condition improved, he said.

On the varying death figures, Vijayvargiya said, “Administrative officials have informed me that four people have died due to this outbreak, but there is information here (in Bhagirathpura) about eight to nine deaths. We will verify this information and if it is found to be correct, financial assistance will be provided to the families of the deceased as announced by CM Mohan Yadav.”

Officials said water supply was restored in Bhagirathpura on Thursday after repairing the leakage in the drinking water pipeline, and water samples were collected from households and sent for testing.
