NIA Arrests 2 More in 2024 Ambush on Ex-Manipur CM’s Convoy

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two more persons in connection with the 2024 armed ambush on the convoy of then chief minister of Manipur N Biren Singh, officials said on Tuesday.

The accused have been identified as Jangminlun Singson alias Franky (44), a resident of Bethel, Churachandpur, and Thangjoel Haokip alias Thangboi (21), a resident of Gamphajang Tuibong, Churachandpur, they said.

The incident occurred on June 10, 2024, when unknown armed miscreants ambushed the then CM's convoy on NH-37 near K Sinam village in Kangpokpi district of Manipur, causing grievous injuries to two security personnel and damage to government vehicles.

The case was originally registered at New Keithelmanbi police station and was subsequently taken over by the NIA on July 11, 2024.

Investigation established the involvement of the two accused, in association with other accused persons, in the planning and facilitation of the ambush, and their linkages with others involved in the conspiracy, a statement issued by the NIA said.

Both had earlier been arrested by NIA in another case, and have now also been arrested in the present case as part of the effort to unravel the larger conspiracy behind the attack, it said.

The accused have been produced before the special NIA court, Thoubal and remanded to 8-day police custody, the anti-terror agency said.

It said further investigation is underway to ascertain their specific roles, establish their linkages with other members of the conspiracy, and identify and apprehend other persons involved in the offence.

Two accused were earlier arrested in the case.
