NCP, Shiv Sena, AIMIM Forge Surprise Alliance In Parli
The NCP has won 16 seats in Parli. Now it has got support from two Shiv Sena, four Independents and the AIMIM councilors. Meanwhile, the BJP’s seven corporators have formed a separate group with two Independents.
Mumbai: In a reflection of Maharashtra’s increasingly fluid civic politics, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and AIMIM have formed a surprise alliance in the Parli Municipal Council. Backed by AIMIM's lone corporator, the NCP has secured a clear edge in the floor leader election. In the 35-member municipal council, 23 corporators submitted letters of support in favour of the floor leader from the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
TheNCP has won 16 seats in Parli. Now it has got support from two Shiv Sena, four Independents and the AIMIM councilors. Meanwhile, the BJP’s seven corporators have formed a separate group with two Independents. The two corporators of NCP(SP) and Congress’s one corporator have decided not to support either of the groups.
The development has raised eyebrows and fueled speculations about Mahayuti’s internal rifts.
The alliance in Parli Municipal Council is not an isolated anomaly but a striking example of a new “pragmatism” sweeping civic polls in 2026. Earlier, BJP’s alliance with Congress in Ambernath and with AIMIM in Akot had triggered political controversies. Both parties subsequently declared that the alliance had been called off. But in Ambernath, Congress’s 12 corporators joined the BJP after their suspension from the party.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Ambadas Danve questioned deputy chief minister Shinde’s commitment towards Hindutva. In a post on X, Mr. Danve said, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
“Looking at the alliance formed between the Shinde faction, MIM, and NCP in the Parli Municipal Council, you (Eknath Shinde) should now permanently stop your talk of “rebellion” and “principles”. While repeatedly claiming you didn’t want the NCP, have you now directly aligned yourself with the MIM? You have now joined hands with the very people you criticized to climb the steps of power. Is this your true ideological stand? Maharashtra has now seen the face of this new marriage for power in Parli.”
